The cups have an expensive, calibrated strong magnet, and a flat metal plate with the pins that fit into the keyhole track. At the proper release pressure, the magnetized cup will separate from the metal plate, which stays in the track system. This means there is nothing to break or wear out, and the magnet has been calibrated to meet FEI requirements. This makes the cups the best design on the market as compared with spring release, which can experience metal fatigue, or weakening of the mechanism, with repeated use.
